October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are many events and fund raisers held this month to help the people who battle breast cancer every year. Most of us know someone, or love someone, who has been touched or taken by breast cancer. By raising awareness of prevention of this disease, we can reduce the amount of lives lost.

Pink is the color of this awareness campaign. One of the most visible and constant reminders throughout the month of October is the lighting of buildings in the United States with the color pink.

Lower Your Risk of Breast Cancer

The information for lowering your risk for breast cancer is one of the most important components of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

You can lower your risk of breast cancer by changing those risk factors that are within your control.

Increased body weight and weight gain as an adult are linked with a higher risk of breast cancer, especially after menopause.

Alcohol also increases risk of breast cancer, even at low levels of alcohol consumption.

Studies have shown that moderate to vigorous physical activity brings with it lower breast cancer risk.

Eating a diet that is rich in vegetables, fruit, poultry, fish, and low-fat dairy products has also been linked with a lower risk of breast cancer.

To sum up what you can do, right now, to reduce the risk of breast cancer is:

  • Get regular, intentional physical activity.
  • Reduce your lifetime weight gain by limiting your calories and getting regular physical activity.
  • Avoid or limit your alcohol intake.

Women who breastfeed may also reduce their breast cancer risk.

No hormone therapy after menopause can help avoid raising risk.

Though not yet proven, avoiding environmental estrogen-like products can reduce risk such as those found in some plastic bottles or certain cosmetics and personal care products.
